Taize Worship January 25

Posted on January 5, 2012

Calvary will host a Taizé style music worship service in the sanctuary of the big red church on Wednesday, January 25 at 7:00 pm. This is a free service and all are welcome. The Taizé community originated in France and is a group of brothers devoted to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. The music of the Taizé worship emphasises simple phrases, usually lines from psalms or other pieces of Scripture, repeated and sometimes also sung in canon. It is very peaceful and reflective and anyone can participate, even if you do not know the music.

Posted on May 24, 2011

Beginning June 5, Calvary's summer worship time will be 9:00 am. We initiated this time change a couple of years ago to take advantage of the cooler morning temperatures in the sanctuary. It also gives everyone a longer day to enjoy summer time activities with family and friends.

The earlier 9:00 am worship time begins the Sunday following Memorial Day weekend and continues through the Labor Day weekend. This year we return to the 10:00 am worship time on September 11, 2011.

Lenten Book Study

Posted on February 18, 2011

Sundays from March 13 through April 17, we will offer discussions after worship of the book, What’s the Least I can Believe and Still be a Christian?, by Martin Thielen (published by Westminster John Knox Press).  In 150 pages, Rev. Thielen covers 10 things Christians don’t need to believe and 10 things Christians do need to believe.  John Buchanan, Pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago, IL, writes of Thielen’s book, “Martin Thielen’s whimsical title disguises a very serious issue every clergyperson deals with daily: how to help Christians navigate through myths and misunderstandings and faulty assumptions about our faith.  This is a fine resource for clergy and laity alike, particularly those who have wondered, ‘Do I have to believe that?’”  Here are two of the ten things Thielen says Christians do not need to believe, God causes cancer, car wrecks, and other catastrophes, and true Christians can’t believe in evolution.

If you plan to make some or all of the discussion, please purchase your own copy of the book and give it a read through before Sunday, March 13. We’ll spend the first three Sundays on things we don’t have to believe and the remaining three Sundays on things we need to believe. Even if you cannot make the discussions, this book is worth reading. We’ll meet in the upper classroom/nursery after the fellowship time that follows worship (approximately 11:15 - noon).

Annual Meeting and New Members

Posted on January 20, 2011

Sunday, January 30 is a big day at Calvary! During worship, we will be blessed to receive 10 new members to the Calvary family! In addition, our Annual Meeting of the Congregation will take place following the worship service, and will be accompanied by Second Table. The "first table" happens on the first Sunday of each month, when we gather around the communion table to share the bread and wine by which Christ calls us to remember him. For Second Table, we gather to share food and fellowship with one another. Around both tables, we invite all of our brothers and sisters to join in, as Christ welcomed all to his table.

New Year's Eve Labyrinth Open 4pm-9pm (12/31/10)

Posted on December 28, 2010

This New Year's Eve (Friday, December 31, 2010) the labyrinth at Calvary Church will be open to the public from 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Many walkers find the experience to be a peaceful and moving one. The sanctuary is lit by candles and the light from six Christmas trees lining the perimeter of the labyrinth. Prayerful music plays quietly in the background. A long-time tradition, the "burning bowl", will be available. A single candle sits in the center of a sand-lined bowl with slips of paper and pens & pencils nearby. Some people find it helpful to let go of old ideas, thoughts, habits, etc., by writing them down and burning them at the bowl, leaving room for new ones to come into their lives.

Stewardship

Posted on November 10, 2010

This Sunday, November 14, is Consecration Sunday at Calvary, when the congregation pledges its time, talents and financial resources to the church for the coming year and shares a meal (Second Table) together. Leading up to this important day on each of three Sundays before, various folks from the congregation shared their thoughts about what Calvary Church and stewardship means to them. Although every one of the speakers did an awesome job, one of them in particular, Anna Martin, 10-year old daughter of members Sue and Tom Martin, stood out. Everyone was extremely moved by her thoughtfulness and appreciation of the people at Calvary she has come to call "family". Anna has graciously agreed to share her words with everyone who couldn't be there that day to hear her. To read Anna's wonderful speech, click HERE.

This Sunday, Kelcey Kalumbula will speak and Bekki Schmitt, Don Thomas, and Anna will give a brief summary of their talks.  After they have shared their reasons for pledging, Sue Martin, this year’s chair of Stewardship, will distribute the pledge forms.  The forms will ask for contact information, so we can keep that information up-to-date in the church office, ways you would like to participate in the life and ministry of our church with your time and talents, the amount of money you are pledging for 2011, and how you wish to make your contributions: weekly, monthly, quarterly, or a lump sum for the year.

Camp Calvary

Posted on August 13, 2010

Laurel United Methodist Church in Springfield, Illinois "camped" at Calvary Church while building Milwaukee homes with Habitat for Humanity. Eleven youth and seven adult mentors brought all their gear, including all the tools for the job, to Milwaukee for the week of August 8-13 to work on building two houses on the near north side. To help reduce the costs, church groups doing volunteer work with Habitat stay with other local churches. The Laurel UMC group found Calvary through Rev. Bill Johnstone, a retired minister active with Habitat--who also happens to be Pastor Mark's father-in-law! They slept on air mattresses at night, showered next door at the Marquette Rec Plex in the Straz dorm building, and ate three meals a day prepared and served at Calvary by Laurel's own kitchen crew. Thanks to their wonderful contribution, two new homes were added to the Milwaukee landscape. God bless their work!

Recently, Calvary was home for one night to Garri George, Sr. and Garri George, Jr., whose mission in 2008 and again in 2010 is to ride bicycles across the U.S. to raise money for a group called Youth for Christ in East-Central Indiana. The father & son team contacted Calvary to arrange for a night's stay before heading out over Lake Michigan and the last leg of their two month trip that began this past May. Check out their blog HERE. Calvary got a mention and a photo!
